Proceed,maidensofPieria.TheboysChromisandMnasylossawSilenuslyingasleepinacavern,hisveinsswollenaseverwiththewineofyesterday:justapartlaythegarlandsslidfromhishead,andtheheavywine-jarhungbyitswornhandle.Fallingonhim,foroftentheoldmanhadmockedthembothwithexpectationofasong,theyfetterhiminhisowngarlands.Aeglejoinscompanyandreinforcestheirfaintcourage,AeglefairestoftheNaiads;and,nowhiseyesareopen,stainshisbrowandtempleswithblood-redmulberries.He,laughingattheirwiles,cries,Whytiethesebonds?releaseme,boys:enoughthatyoufanciedyouweresostrong.Markthesongsyoudesire;foryousongs,forhershallbeanotherpayment.Andwiththathebegins.ThenindeedthoumightestseeFaunsandwildcreaturessportinginmeasure,thenmassyoaksswayingtheirtops:norsomuchdoestheParnassiancliffrejoiceinPhoebusnorsomuchRhodopeandIsmarusmarvelatOrpheus.
